My Ubuntu 10.04 no longer recognizes my cd-rom drive.

I installed ubuntu about three months ago and everything was fine, till one day when I tried to watch a new DVD. The CD-Drive did hum for a sec but nothing happened. I tried to open it by clicking at the drive's icon, but could no longer find it.

-The CD-Drive did work before
-It can not be found in "places"
-"Disk Utility" does not show it

How can I find/make my computer recognize my cd-drive?

Thank you very much for your help in advance!

CD drives are generally not be capable of reading DVDs.

It it was capable, and now doesn't work, and you didn't change anything, perhaps it is broken?

Have you tried to read another disk ( CD or DVD ) in that drive ?

Are you dual-booting another OS?
Does that OS see the drive?

Welcome to LQ!

You replace the bad/broken DVD drive with one that works. Since it DID work, and now it doesn't...chances are, it's broken. Fix it, or get a new one.
