Mutt-ng configuration with smtp returns "unknown" on Slackware-12.2

Mutt-ng complains that "smtp_host" is unknown when I run it on Slackware-12.2. My version of Mutt.ng is the latest from SlackBuilds.org, but I added "--with-smtp" to the configure command in the build script in hope but without success. Otherwise it seems to work perfectly well reading both pop and imap folders. Are more complex configuration settings needed than the smtp_host itself or ancilliary libraries? I note that some people use additional utilities perhaps to by-pass the problem but can it be made to work simply?
