Monitor problems

hi , i have a RIC554M and linux does not have the drivers for this model. i am a newbie so i changed what i and another member had found online to my xorg.conf file. X failed to start. i use mostly mandrake at home. redhat at school and sometimes at home and, i also use debian. none of these distros have support for my monitor does anyone have a viable solution besides buying a new monitor or leaving this one on 640x480 and on redhat 800x600 in the unprobed driver?
please help.

i fyou know the resolution and refresh rate your monitor i capable of, you can enter them in xorg.conf.

like "1024x768@75"

just donīt enter higher values than your hardware is capable of, you might break the thingie.

Driver for your monitor?

I have seen drivers for video cards that monitors attach to, and refresh/sync rates for monitors along with resolutions, but I don't recall coming across a driver for a monitor. Is there something I'm missing? Can you post the error and your xorg.conf (the relevant sections) maybe we can help figure out what the problem is. What's your hardware specs, specifically, what video card?

Cool

Which branch?

Instead of looking for info on it here's how I'd go about it:

Use conservative settings in your Horizontal/Vert Refresh entries in xorg.conf And slowly move up. Begin very very low, and make the default depth something small, like 16, and the resolution what you want it at, probably 1024x768. And then slowly work up. But if the problem is not the monitor, then you should be able to get an error message when starting x with startx, that'll be something worth posting up as well.

Good luck!

Cool
