Question Module Missing, and I can't figure out which one I need...

I have a kinda odd install that I am working on--I tried doing a default debian woody install on my Panasonic Toughbook R1 (laptop), and couldn't get X working, so I figured that I would try the more experimental stuff, and see if that helped, so I changed my sources.list to the "testing" versions, and did an update, and then re-did my setup w/ tasksel and dselect.

After this, I compiled and sucessfully booted a new kernel (my first time!!)--it is the latest 2.6.0-test11.

I don't know which module I need to run my video card, and I don't know where to get it from/what to do with it once I have it. Advice is appreciated. Thanks, and sorry that all this crap takes up so much space

It seems you have already loaded your Intel graphics card module as shown here:

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "i810"
BusID "PCI:00:02:0"
VideoRam 48000
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection
However, you can get Intel's own driver for your particular VGA card here.

Read the README linked lest you want to have more problems than you already have

I am reading the README, and I understand most of it, just not step 3b---I guess I don't know what the "kernel headers" are, and I searched for it here, but couldn't get anything specific to my situation--everyone else seems to know what kernel headers are already.

Do they want me to run menuconf? or something?? Will I need to recompile my kernel to use this?

Thanks

************************************************************
*3.a. TAR INSTRUCTIONS
************************************************************

1. Install Linux

2. Log in as root or as a superuser

3. Install kernel headers

a. For Red Hat versions, this is normally on CD2:
/RedHat/RPMS/kernel-source-2.4.18-3.i386.rpm

b. Alternately, load your kernel config file,
save the config, and run “make dep”

4. Extract the downloaded files:

a. tar –zxvf 20030106-i386-Linux.tar.gz

5. Ensure X Windows is not running

6. cd dripkg

7. ./install.sh

8. Follow the prompts; most users should be able to press
“Enter” at each prompt

Don't bother with step 3b. Just check whether you have anything in /usr/src/linux.

Suck--when I run the install, it tells me that only 2.4.x kernels are supported. Do you know of a different driver that will work w/ 2.6.0???

Or must I run a 2.4.x kernel?

Thanks,

Dean

Argh... 2.6.x kernel series are developmental builds. You'll get near zero support for that series by hardware vendors.

I am about to commit suicide....

I have tried as many things as I can think of trying to get this stupid card working. I have upgraded to sarge and used a 2.6 kernel, a 2.4 kernel (all the apt-get/tasksel stuff puked on me~told me packages were broken). I have tried woody w/ a 2.4.23 kernel, and when I run startx i still end up w/ a fatal server error??? Below is my current /var/log/XFree86.log

If anyone can help me get this infernal gfx card running X I will be in your debt

Oh--I almost forgot--I am trying to use the latest KDE, and in my sources.list, I included:

deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.4/Debian stable main

...

and---I am too dumb to go back to the default?? If I remove the source, and redo apt-get update, will the package revert?

does the version of KDE I specify have ANYTHING to do with my problem?

The problem shouldn't have anything to do with KDE or watever desktop/window manager.

If you installed the driver from the intel website mention before, it says in the readme "XFree86* 4.2.0 or later" is required, and you're running 4.1. Try upgrading to the latest 4.3, you actually don't have to do anything special to get it working besides having a properly configured /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, the driver for your video card(i810 module) is already included in Xfree86. You do not need the kernel drm module unless you want DRI(for openGL etc). Get X to load first and worry about DRI later.

The problem you had your original post seems to be with the "xtt" module, you could've tried commenting it out.

Try this one:
http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots...x.i386.tar.bz2
extract and run install.sh then follow onscreen instructions

then download:
http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/drivers/x86/XFree86
and put it in your /usr/X11R6/bin/ (backup original first)

when I try the first solution alone, it generates errors... w/ both patches implimented, I get the regular log, and at the end--below the log--it outputs stuff about using authority file /root/.Xauthority and /usr/.../xinit/xserverc: /usr/bin/X11/X: cannot execute binary file and then it prints the last message again except it says "../X11/X: success" After that it says: "giving up"

"xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server"

"xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error"

I still haven't figured this problem out? Does anyone have any leads, or good ideas?

Thanks for the help...
