Mandrake question

Hi, I'm trying to install my nvidia drivers, but i can't shut down X-server...
If i try to enter in failsafe, it doesn't recoginze my root password.
How do i exit x-server to login as root?

Not a mandrake user but it should work:
Try Alt+CTRL+F1. You'll get a login promt. Login as root and type: init 3
this should kill your X-server. Then if you type init 5 your sever should be running again in
ALT+CTRL+F7 (or maybe F6)

if this doesn't work edit /etc/inittab. You'll find a line like this:
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:5:initdefault:
change 5 to 3 and the next time you boot, you'll boot in a text mode.
(in slackware the X11 mode is 4, but i'm pretty sure in mandrake it's 5 like redhat)
