Mandrake 9.1 and sound

Hi all...I have a question about some sound related issues. I'm currently running Mandrake 9.1 on the Abit KD7-S mobo. This mobo has built in sound running off of the VIA VT8235 (ALC650?). My sound was abosolutely horrible...crackly and poppy. So I said what the hell and went to ALSA and got the driver, lib, and utils packages (9.4.0) I believe. Ran configure, make, and make install just like the documentation said. All that went without a hitch. Then the documentation said to do modprobe on a few different things. Well modprobe isn't working...it comes up with unresolved reverences in lib/modules/2.4.2(not sure exactly what version)/kernel/asoundcore/....some path like that. Sorry for the vague references...i'm not currently on the machine having problems. I can list them exactly as they appear later today. Was wondering if anyone out there is having the same issues, or can help me with this...like i said if need be i can list the exact error messages later today. Thanx for your help.

OK:
First: you need the kernel source code. Get it from Mandrake. Install it on the "/usr/src/linux" directory. You´ll need it to recompile the kernel later.
Second: You need to rewrite the "modules.config" file and add the ALSA modules there, so that you kernel will load them at boot time.
Third: A mixer program should already be installed in your system, something like kmix or aumix.
Fourth: Now you need to recompile the kernel with sound card support only. No other modules.
If you need help recompiling the kernel try reading the thread about it on the Slackware Forum.
Hope this helps
