Lost my Cinnamon desktop in Mint 17.1

When I login, all I get is a screen with Ubuntu 14.? No response to mouse clicks. ctrl-alt-F1 gets a login screen where I login as root and killall -u username to get the cinnamon system to go away.

To be more complete:
I was running Cinnamon 2.4.8 on Mint 17.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 on Debian (Jessie). The Cinnamon desktop stopped working, so I rebooted. No login screen, only a reddish page with "Ubuntu 14.04" in the center.
I have (since last post) installed Cinammon but nothing changed. I can issue "startx" to get a Cinnamon desktop, but no icons in the toolbar (except default) and firefox does not remember any of the tool bar, bookmark or other settings. Rebooting did not help after install.

Sorry about the confusion before; only way I can get out once the red "Ubuntu 14.04" screen appears is ctrl-alt-F1. I initially killed all user related processes in the hope that the display manager would be reset. (Of course, that did not work.)

now you're messing with me.
pointlessly, because my request was justified and not in the least nitpicky, as you are implying now.

what happened prior to it? update/grade, installed new software, anything?

at first i thought it was a driver problem, but firefox not remembering anything... could be your hard drive is full, or the system switched to read only for some reason...

the key is to see the boot- and other logs for signs.

first of all, you will have to boot into rescue mode (i think you have to press and hold shift during boot, to get the grub menu, then select rescue or emergency or single user mode. can be named differently).

there, issue the following commands:
Code:
lspci -k >> multilog
du -h >> multilog
sudo ls /var/log >> multilog
then reboot, find the file "multilog" in your $HOME, and post its content here.

if that doesn't work, remove the ">> multilog" bit from all commands and simply post their output here.
