Looking for a distro recommendation

Looking for a new distro to move to but there's too many choices. arg

I've been using Linux Mint Cinnamon since 17.1 and am now on 18.3
This has been over several different boxes, and I've had consistent issues with Mint, and am now tired of them. For example:

-shutdown hangs more often than not - every box (fixes are temporary)

-permissions seem to set at random when installing/adding stuff, like a hard drive suddenly inaccessible to the user

-problems with Virtualbox - can't create vdi's

-automount of disks fails regularly - system crashed recently when I was doing something I obviously shouldn't, but that's what backups are for, right? That's what I thought till I saw the backup was empty and neither Timeshift nor Systemback could find their files.

That last one was the killer - after re-installing and rebuilding, the system sucks.

Any suggestions out there for this?

How about Antergos? What's the feeling out there on it?

I know that you're not a Newbie, but have you had a look at the sticky on choosing a distro?

If I understand correctly, you are looking for a distro that:

1. Is familiar and comfortable for a Mint user
2. Uses the Cinnamon desktop
3. Is extremely stable and reliable

Are those three statements accurate? If so, I think you would really enjoy the Cinnamon flavor of Debian Stable.

Thanks.
So far, my list to check out in full install, because a) I can't get VB working on Mint anymore

this can happen on some hardware (ACPI problems usually), but is very unlikely to happen on several boxes, if they aren't near-identical. and in my experience the real fixes have never been temporary.
so i wonder what sort of boxes you are talking about here.

my opinion of linux mint is not very high, but that would be a grievous bug, and, no offense, i think you just misunderstood something.
like, i don't know, formatting a drive with elevated privileges, then not chown'ing it to your regular user. polkit not properly set up due to messing around with desktop environments. something like that.

Quote:
problems with Virtualbox - can't create vdi's
that's a software problem, and likely not distro-specific.

Quote:
automount of disks fails regularly
automount of what?
i think this is just a consequence of something else that broke.
or too new or too old smartphones.
could be anything.
this is way too roundabout.

now we're getting closer to the disadvantages of a distro like Linux Mint.
they make you think that everything just works 100%, and try to provide a GUI for everything.
A GUI that hides what is actually going on underneath.
Nevertheless i wonder what this mysterious "something" was.

no offense, but to you i wouldn't recommend something that is essentially archlinux.
as your other thread proves.

why not just good ol' *buntu with a generous dose of scepticism (i.e. do not trust blindly that your GUI backup software will "Just Work")?

Antergos looked really, really good.
Except we're talking molasses.

Something to consider:
All along I've been using Mint's "USB Image Creator". Mistake. Ubuntu Mate 18x and at least a half-dozen other distro choices were "Fails" in attempts to install them.

When I made a USB with Rufus in Windows, however, the installs went flawlessly, including program success. No little weirdnesses like spots on the screen. Nice. Been trying lots of distros with only great frustration, 'cause I'd been doing it with that Image Creator thing. Boo, hiss.

Spent a lot of time with these issues, that may have been solved right away with good stuff.
The lesson is that FOSS is not necessarily always very good; but I'm sure you all know that. Just letting you know that I'm catching on, too.

I was happy with Mint 18.3, but things went a little weird. Having now re-everything-ed, and re-installed Sylvia, all is well.

I've found that Etcher (https://www.balena.io/etcher/) has quite a good success rate.
