Possible reasons:
1) Bad cd (if you've downloaded it yourself, check the sum www.md5summer.org)
2) Not detected cd (possible only with VERY old machines).

7 years old? It's 1995, right? What processor is it?
md5summer calculates sum of the image. In the directory you took image from there should be MD5SUM file, with correct sum. If the two differ, there was a transmission error. NOTE: md5summer is for Windows (In Linux you use md5sum).

The I have burned a couple cds and all of them give me the same error. The iso files check out ok when I run that md5sum program.

I am pretty sure the error is with the hardware. Any suggestions? I will try using floppies again, maybe that will work.
