Linux freezes at boot up!

when i try to boot up linux the settings load but it hangs at "stopping system v runlevel compatability" doesnt go any further or take me to the log in page to log onto the system.
I was trying to change the runlevel to 3 last time it was working but couldnt get it to work- have i changed something accidently which is preventing it starting up. Other things ive installed recently are shh, & tightvmc would this be a problem?
Guess i will have to do a reinstall
