ldap confusion!

hello friends i want to erase my confusion about ldap...
we call ldap (lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
rather we manage users and groups with ldap... my confusion about "directory access protocol".
one another question:-
Is this similar to "Active Directory Domain Conrtoller"?

AD contains and LDAP interface, but Active Directory as a product does a LOT LOT more than merely be an LDAP server. Domain membership, kerberos, group policy. LDAP is only used in AD to hold user data and a few other things.
