ld-linux.so.1 problems with Quake 2

Hi,
i'm having problems trying to run quake 2.
I have the CD, so i followed the steps offered at...
tldp.org/HOWTO/Quake-HOWTO-3.html*

i tried using the RPMs but with all the dependency problems i gave up on installation via rpm
so i when to the TaR files...
i unzipped the content to /usr/local/games/quake2/

i set the permissions...

but then when i try to run the game i get...

[root@Linux quake2]# ./quake2 +set vid_ref softx
bash: ./quake2: /lib/ld-linux.so.1: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory

Any help would be greatly appreciated...
