I think it is best to purchase complete products. Yes, you could have not only exposed yourself or others or laptop or house to some danger not only by fire but hazardous chemicals.

If you open a battery it has cells, replacing with the exact same cells is not that scary. Unless, you're marking up the price?

Glad you got it resolved, and happy to be dead wrong; I figured that since the old one had some voltage that the battery wasn't the problem. You figured that it was acceptable to buy a replacement and that worked out. I agree also on the subject avoiding replacing cells as far as hassle goes, when the cost of a new one is minimal.
