Keyboard trouble with install

I have installed College Linux on a recent partition, and it has asked me to set a root password. Enter works fine, but no other keys do. Is there anything to do, or is it just best to reinstall the whole thing? If its any help Im dual booting with XP.

Something off track, but-
I reformatted my linux partition from reiserFS to Ext3. When it was in reiser and went to load linux, i got this message-

VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 03:43
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernal panics VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:43

This changed when i reformated the partition. Has this got to do with the format or the boot manager (using paragon boot manager) or is their something else?
Any help will be welcomed.

k- haha- found that no asterisks show when typing password, even when it is being entered. Security reason. But can anyone help with why it came up with -

VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 03:43
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernal panics VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:43

-on the first installation. Cheers
