lilo errors

When i try to update my kernel to 2.4.6 it compiles fine and i edit the lilo.conf file but when i type lilo i get the error message:
warning: device 0x0305 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit
fatal: sector54089400 too large for linear mode (try 'lba32' instead)
what does that mean and how do i get my system to boot the new kernel?

Ok,
Let me start off by saying that i probably do not know anymore than you do but i would try loading with my boot up disk and then looking at the LILO configurations.
