Question kde4 issues: adding widgets to panel & desktop question

Hi,

I just installed KDE4 (after adding the launchpad repository) {sudo aptitude update [then] sudo aptitude install kde4-core} in Kubuntu Gutsy. I am having a few problems:
  1. I cannot add any widgets to the black panel at the bottom of the screen. I have tried dragging & dropping from the desktop and from the widget box, but nothing works. I for one miss seeing my network icon in the sys tray!
  2. I cannot access any programs, e.g. Adept, that require admin login -- the dialog box says my password is not correct, even though I know it is correct.
  3. I cannot configure different wallpapers or backgrounds for the different desktops.
  4. If I click on the taskbar of a program window, it does not cause the window to fold up so that only the taskbar is showing (like it does in some of the online video demonstrations).

With the first item especially, I somehow deleted the panel section that shows what open programs you have running. Right now if I minimize anything, I see no way to restore the window (is there a keyboard shortcut for this?)

Has anyone experienced these problems,or found any solutions? This is so new that I may not be finding the right configuration options to do these things.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

UPDATE: Here is what I have found for adding icons to the panel:

1. In the add widget dialog box, I had to drag the yellow star to the taskbar (rather than the main image for the widget). This allowed placement on the taskbar.

2. In the new kmenu, you can right-click any item to add it to the toolbar as well. Useful if you miss having certain shortcuts on the taskbar.

I have two panels. How do I choose to WHICH ONE the program will be added?
