Kali Linux 1.0.8 issue running Postfix & Vsftpd

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. I am excited to be a part of the group.

I am running kali linux 1.0.8 in vmware workstation (3.14-kali-amd64). I am unable to install the following:

Postfix
Vsftpd

I attempted to install the package using the "sudo apt-get install postfix" command. I have been able to install this package on a newer version of kali linux but I am attempting to recreate a Cisco virtual lab I completed in which they had postfix and vsftpd running on this version of kali.

I continue to get the following message:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gsettings-desktop-schemas : Breaks: gnome-settins-daemon (< 3.19.92) but 3.4.2+git20121218.7c1322-3+deb7u3 is to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

Can you please help resolve.

FYI- The content of the “sources.list” file include the following:

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free

Read the "Question Guidelines" link in my posting signature. You say you're trying to install those things...but don't tell us HOW you're trying to do it, what you're typing, etc. Best we can guess at by the messages, is that you need to install those missing packages first.

Secondly, since you joined...did you read the sticky post at the top of this forum about Kali, and why you SHOULD NOT BE USING IT???

Thank you TB0ne for your reply. I added some additional detail to my original post. The only reason I'm working with this version of Kali Linux is to recreate a lab environment I completed with cisco. In the lab they were running postfix and vsftpd on this version of Linux. If I can't get a solution to this issue I will use the newer version of Kali. Thanks again TB0ne.

Doesn't look like it; looks like you deleted it entirely.

Again, since you missed it the first time: DO NOT USE KALI. Can't be more plain than that. Read that sticky post, as you was suggested. Kali is **NOT** meant to run postfix/vsftpd, or other such services. It's to be used for network security/pentesting, and it even says that on their own website. What you CAN do is different than what you SHOULD do.

If you want to run those services, pick a different distro. You can load the exact same tools that Kali has on any other distro. There is ZERO reason to use it unless you are doing network security and are an EXPERIENCED Linux user. EVERYTHING in Kali runs as root, which is exactly what you SHOULD NEVER DO.

well this seems to be hinting at network security:

kalilearner2, maybe you would like to give some more information about what exactly you are recreating there. links?
i must admit it does NOT sound like a good idea to run postfix or vsftpd on kali linux.

I read it as "I saw postfix and vsftpd running on Kali at a class I took, and I want to run it at home now", rather than re-create the entire lab environment. Kali would only be a tool to let people poke at a training network in that case.

Perhaps it would be useful to contact the instructor for this course since you seem to be trying to reproduce what was done in the class. Most, if not all instructors of technical classes like this are extremely helpful and also know the various pitfalls very well.

Very typical that I'd take a class and then either the instructor leaves our facility or I return from a trip somewhere, I try something I'd learned in the class and it fails immediately and in some entirely obtuse way for my perspective. I give it a few go's, then contact the instructor and they have nearly an immediate + simple fix, "you forgot to put <blah-blah> in your path", "you forgot to define xxx_tree in your profile", or something similar.
