Need a newer version of linux would like mint. have it on a stick drive but how do I install it. firefox too old, needs flash update. can download but again how to install. I get that I can extract it but to where and then run in what terminal?. Has got to be simple but at a loss as to how. Three years of networking school " in windows" so not a total loss of as to how to get my way around in dos, just learning linux. would even wait for a dvd to be sent to me in the mail if I have to but if I knew how I could do it now off the stick drive. when I try to boot from it just goes to blinking curser and nothing..... Please help. Thank you in advance...
Re: just installed fedora 9. having newbie trouble
I do not know what type of system you are trying to put it on, but the easiest way to install any Linux flavor is to put it in VB. Download Virtual Box and install it. Create a new machine, accept the defaults, and when it's finished, either download an iso.image and mount it through the virtual CD or enable USB and boot it from there. To enable the USB you will have to download the USB extension from the VB website. You may use VMware too, but I know nothing about the steps for that. You may have a corrupted download that is preventing it from installing on the system. It happens. I had to download Fedora 18 3 times to get a clean copy. Hope this helps.

What?!?!?! How do you install VB on a machine that has no operating system on it. I assume you need an OS to run VB on, don't you? What am I missing here?

Holy frankenpost Batman...let's divide this mess up into manageable questions.

Why? Fedora 9 is incredibly old and has been completely unsupported for nearly 4 years.

Depends on the software. Some you have to compile from source, some you can install from RPM, some you can install using the package manager (yum). Specific answers require specific questions.

So why did you install such an old distro if you need a new one? Wipe your Fedora 9 install and install something newer. If you want mint, then install mint, they're on version 14.

How did you install Fedora 9? Just follow the same process for mint.
