I have not been able to locate an .iso file to upgrade from ubuntu 8.1 to 9.04. I tried the live upgrade and that failed. I can find the 9.04 .img file but I really would rather use a dvd to install the upgrade.
It has generally been the case that a new installation has fewer problems than an upgrade. You might try from scratch if upgrading from a DVD is also futile.

I again tried the online upgrade to 9.04 and realized that the bottom of the terminal window was hidden behind the task bar. After getting the whole window open I was able to respond to the question and 2 hours later I had 9.04 running. My 10 inch screen settings hid the task bar.
