Is GPG outdated?

hello,

I encrypted a tar file with gnu/gpg and ran the file command to check the encryption type. I got this.

Code:
file bin_12-24-2019.tar.asc

bin_12-24-2019.tar.asc: PGP message Symmetric-Key Encrypted Session Key (old)
I noticed the old at the end. What does this mean?

Is gpg outdated?

Thanks

My guess would be that the GPG key itself is old, and new one should be generated.

I think you mean to say, "has GPG been superseded?". To which the answer may well be "probably, or yes, it has"...

Elaborate, please.

The gpg key was generated a few months ago.

That's what search engines are for, in any case, I think you read far too much into my comment... that I can tell you.

So for the purposes of clarity, and while perhaps my choice of words wasn't the best; my point was that there are likely other solutions available, be that open-source/free and/or pay-for solutions, be that, Linux or non-Linux based solutions - if the OP is unhappy with GPG.

All that said, I won't be debating what's better or worse (or what, if any other offerings are available), and I have a veggie garden to water...

That may be, but it appears that the software you are using thinks that's "old". So you can either generate a new key, and it's likely at least the "old" part of the message will go away, or ignore the word "old" and move on, or find something else to use instead... your choice.

I'd also suggest you read the documentation about it, as I would think that might give you a firm definition of exactly what "old" means in this context...

would be nice to tell us how did you generate that exactly and which OS you have (including the version of file)
