Question "Invalid tar magic" error msg. when I try to tar ldmud *.tar file in DSL

Greetings,

I'm as you probably figured out a Newbie to Linux, so I'm here to this forum...

I actually became aware of and started using Linux back in the 90's but I just started picking it up voluntarily of my own accord and not from a friend's suggestion this time around, and I have to say it's quite liberating, but that's just mho...

Anyway, I'm running Damn Small Linux on the HD in a WinXP machine, which apparently is running in a fashion which dumps programs/doesn't save them

I downloaded ldmud in the *.tar.gz format, which I proceeded to gunzip, then tar -xf ldmud-3.3.719.tar
which produced the error message
"Invalid tar magic," which makes absolutely no senses to me, so if someone could explain to me how to solve this problem so I can actually compile ldmud and start creating a MUD server...

Thanx,

Hi pixxi451, Welcome to LQ. Try the -z option for the gzip extension from the original file.

Code:
$ tar -xzvf filename.tar.gz
Good luck. ;-)

Check the download, could be a corrupt file.

Good luck. ;-)
