Lightbulb installing programs in mandrake 9.1

hi all, i am fairly new to linux (bet your all tired of hearing that from people, but we all have to start somewere dont we)

I have got the hang on the basic set up and got my router working etc, but i would like to install a few programs i have some are in tar.gz format.

my question is how do i install them? do i just click on them or is it more fun than that, as when i click on it i just seem to open up the folder but i cannot do any thing else with it.

how can i install them please
