Installing new moniter

I am installing an HP monitor. How do I change the monitor settings to allow for the new higher resolution monitor?

A bit more information please:

1. Distro

2. What resolution do you want to use?

3. Which graphics card are you using?

Before you get started with changing things, have you plugged the monitor in and rebooted? Then you can go under > System > Preferences > Screen Resolution if you are using gnome or the control center if you are using KDE.

I've never actually had to do anything to get a new monitor working other than plug it in and reboot.
