Installing Linux on a HDD connected to a PCI Ultra ATA 133 controller

I have a computer with an ide ultra pci ata 133 controller (bought it from comp usa - so the brand says comp usa) connected to a 120 GB hard drive. I have xp installed on it with 30 Gb free space left for linux. My problem is once I boot with the linux CD in it it does not recognize the hard drive and says that this is a diskless workstation. The drivers that came with it are only for window 98 or later, so does anyone know where I can locate a linux driver for this and if so how would I go about installing it if my linux installation will not recognize it. Do I have to connect the drive to onboard controller? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I just bought a card like that myself, the techie at CompUSA's HQ on the phone said it's a software based card. Awhile back Promise Technology made cards similiar to this, in which case they -extended- IDE to include more devices. Promise developed their card to the open IDE standards, virtually making it work with ANY Operating System. However, this is not the case with CompUSA's card. It's software driven, meaning, sorry, WINDOWS ONLY! And you can probably bet Bill Gates had a hand in it... Unless there's hacked up drivers to force the card's closed standard to work properly in Linux, tough luck man.
