installing additional software as admin?

12 Very, very basic question: I have Mandrake 10 installed and it is fine. I am loggged in as a user "John." How do I log in as admin (with the password I gave, etc.) so I can install more programs?
##
Second: My CD drive was recognised by the system, but is no longer showing on the desktop, along with the now missing trash bin. What have I done?

Thanks!

What windows manager are you using (KDE or Gnome)

to login as admin

type

su

in a terminal, then put in the root password.

You can also login as the root accound using

username: root
password: whatever you assigned at installation

You can also run graphical programs in root mode by typeing

kdesu theNameOfTheProgram

eg

kdesu konqueror
PS: in linux the root user is the admin user.

About the CD.
Mandrake 10 is quite funny.

to view the CD-ROM or floppy disk, you have to mount it.
Type on the shell:
mount /mnt/cdrom/
And when is mounted mandrake creates additionaly a shorcut on the desktop.

The short cut is pointing to /mnt/cdrom/ so what in windows was d:\ in linux is /mnt/cdrom/ (in mnt you have all your disk devices as the floppy disk, the windows partition, the usb bar, cdrecorder...)
