Installing a "tar.gz"


I have installed mepis linux, which I must yes is not too bad for newbie's. Question being how do install a tar.gz file, when i right click on the file I extract it to a folder.....then what do i do to get this program installed? where does it install on the hard drive?

There should be readme or install file that you can read and it will tell you how to install it. Most of the time you can do
./configure
make
make install
However this will vary from program to program. During the intsll process, it should tell you where it is installing. It also helps to use su and install the program as root so you don't get a permission denied error. Most likely the program in installed under /usr/local/

to unpack it you can do
gzip -d filename

then it turns into a .tar file then do

tar filename

ithink...

tar xvfz filename will also do extract all the files into a new directory. I don't think it matters what order you do those options in either.

tar zxf *.tar.gz
./configure
make
make install
make clean
