Hi all!
I have 2 troubles.I have a nec laptop with this hardware: CPU pentium III 800Mhz, 256 MB Ram, 20GB Hdd, use Micronet wireless card through PCMCIA. I devide Hdd to 2 partitions: 1 for Win XP, 1 for my data.
1: I tried to install suse 10.2 on this laptop and I must delete windows xp. While I boot cd to install suse 10.2 I see it load driver for wireless card successfully but when finish install, I can't connect use wireless card to connect Internet , although I see this wireless card led always light. In windows xp, I use wireless card normally.
2: I want to install suse 10.2 to learn, keep the partition which installed win xp. I don't know what boot loader (Grub or Lilo) is suitable for multiOS on single hard disk.
Please give me your solutions! Thanks!

First both Lilo and grub will do I use grub
Second 256 MB internal memory is a minimum 512 Mb would by better
Using 256 MB during installation you can,t as call install ADD ON
Even fore Xp 512 MB performed better
Let say 10 GB would enough to install linux
What do you mean by a wireless card a wireless modem ?

Make sure that you have the "wireless-tools" and "wpa_supplicant" packages installed. You probably do.
Open up the console and enter "sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan". Do you see a list of APs? If so, then the device is installed, and you either need to configure wpa or the problem is with the networking setup.

With SuSE 10.2, the knetwork applet works better for wep but not so well with wpa. I opted for the "Traditional Method with ipup" method at the first dialog of the "Network Devices" -> "Network Card" setup in YaST2 (Click on the Global Tab).

In the next tab, select your wireless device and click edit. You probably want to use "DHCP" so you don't need to manually enter the IP address, Gateway & DNS addresses.
Be sure to go though the Advanced setup portion by clicking on the dropdown box at the bottom of the page. Also double check that the right device driver is shown.

After clicking [NEXT] you will get to the wireless setup part where you will enter the PSK.

I'm typing this from memory because I'm using SuSE 10.3 now. One improvement was that the kinternet network manager applet works great with wpa encryption. I selected my network and entered the psk. Mine is a 64 hex digit key derived from the /dev/random device, so I have keep it on a pendrive and cut and past into the dialog. After that first time, kwallet keeps track of the key, and I just need to enter my password.

First thank ronlau9. I know 512MB ram is better than 256MB. But my laptop is old. I can't improve my machine. In my mind, grub is boot loader which if remove linux on machine installed windows then can't boot windows and lilo not do that. Is that correct?
Thank to jschiwal. if your answer is correct, then my problem is I used opensuse 10.2 that not support wpa. Because my WAP use WPA encryption. And to fix my problem is update to 10.3. I'm alright?

Both Lilo and Grub can be put in the MBR To my knowledge todays distros used mostly GRUB
If you don,t put lilo in the MBR but on the partition where you installed linux then you need some think else to load
lilo.The command in Windows Xp fixmbr should put the mbr back in place, when we still use windows me I did it with dos command
fdisk mbr, but I have not yet done it windows xp
But you also have the choice to use a floppy to boot.

if i want to remove linux os and not use floppy to boot that don't want reinstall windows xp then how can i fix this problem?I remember when i remove linux, windows xp not load, and the sceen display "grub>" as the command dos. i don't know how to continue to load windows xp normally

Stick with grub which is what SuSE uses.

WPA is supported with SuSE 10.2 but the kinternet program that YaST sets up (that runs in KDE) doesn't very well. If there is a knetworkmanager package for SuSE 10.2, try that instead but I don't know if it is integrated with the SuSE scripts. I'm suggesting using the scripts method if knetwork manager isn't available or doesn't work. Knetwork manager is what I use on my laptop with 10.2 and it works great. When I had SuSE 10.2, I would use "sudo /sbin/rcnetwork down eth0" to shut down the NIC and "sudo /sbin/rcnetwork start wlan0" to start wireless. The wpa_psk was in /etc/sysconfig/networking/ifcfg-wlan0. It was entered there from when I selected "managed mode" in YaST2 and entered the key. However when I changed the key, I would edit the ifcfg-wlan0 file instead of re-running YaST2. It was just easier.

FYI, here is what I use to create a random key:
