That's the open-source driver provided by Ubuntu.
I would first try to do this the ubuntu-way.
Look if there is a driver available in System - Administration - Restricted drivers (or something like that)
I doubt it though. What you are looking for is the r128 driver.
Maybe all you need to do is to change the driver section from "ati" to "r128".
But make a backup and make sure that you are comfortable enough to restore the backup from the command line
You can try to edit the screen section. That usually works. Might just work even with the "ati" driver.
Quote:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 24
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
EndSection

Should be self-explanatory. Just add the "mode" you want, and it should show up as an option in System-Admin-Display Resolution
Just remember to do a backup. Can't really hurt to try...
