Cool Ideal Distro for Newbie


What is the ideal distro for newbie?
I want GUI and no GUI.

There are many distros that could be classed as ideal for newbies. Mandriva, Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE, Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS are all very good starting points. Any distro can be used in CLI mode if you do not want to use the GUI or you can run a terminal from within a GUI.

there are lots to choose from, depends on what you want to do with Linux, Slackware would be great if you really want to learn whats "under the hood" and is very flexible and customizable yet simple enough to learn to use proficiently in a short time if you apply yourself, it boots without a gui until you run startx = it does not sweep the commandline under the rug like most distros do nowadays...

Ubuntu is the way to go - it is user friendly and has the largest support forum on the planet - http://ubuntuforums.org/
