What we are talking about? Let's say it frankly. Nobody is careful when making routine maintenance on the terminal, no matter whether as root or as common user. The only 'salvation' is to acquire good engineering practices and to avoid or at least use some safeguard against the ruffiant habits.
Using $ dir or $ ls before undertaking adventurers moves is not entirely bad idea for it doesn't matter how automatically you perform the routine maintenance, the very command suggests that you should read the display before proceeding.
In other cases there are other elementary things that can protect you against 'tales of the unexpected'.
