I need to edit "usb.c" and can't find it

In order to use a speedtouch usb modem, it appears I need to modify one
file : drivers/usb/core/usb.c

Now the path to this file is meant to begin (I think)
/usr/src/linux/.../drivers/usb/core/usb.c

But I can't find this path. I fear I need to compile the kernel or do something horrid like that (for a total noobie) in order to create the path.

What should I do?

I'm running Mandrake 10.0 Community on the specs below.

I went updatedb and it whirred for a bit...

Then I went locate usb.c and got two listings for 'usb.conf', one listed in /etc/makedev.

But no 'usb.c'.

you will have to recompile for the changes to usb.c to take effect because you are altering the kernel source code.

Don't worry it really isn't that hard at all.
