the error message is NTLDR IS MISSING press any key to restart. when i restart without the boot disk, it says 1962 no operating system found, because i don't have the hard disk in the bios anymore, for obvious reasons. what kind of boot disk do i need for this?

put in the linux cd and boot from it
IT IS A BOOT DISK
worst comes to worst, you CAN make a linux boot floppy, but you'll need an existing OS first.

the disk i made is not booting. the file name is Mandrakelinux-10.1-Official-Download-CD1.i586 if this is supposed to work, it doesn't. getting into the bios is not a problem. i can make it look at my cdrom drive and only that, but that has not worked.

Did you burn the cd image to a disc with a special app or did did you just drag and drop the cd to the drive in windows and burned that? You need to burn the iso in something like nero, anyone know of a free one for win he could use?

Burn4Free is a nice free Windows burning tool. Just used it the other day for my Mandrake CDs.
