How well are ATI graphics cards supported?


I am wondering how well an ATI Radion HD6450 is supported under linux? I know Nvidia are well supported, but are ATI?

i did have ati hd 4870 but couldnt find ati's drivers for it. (something about needing legacy drivers and Xorg being wrong version) i just bought 50e nvidia card instead.

The radeon driver that comes with your kernel supports ati hd 4870
The radeon driver supports PCI, AGP, and PCIe video cards based on the following ATI/AMD
chips (note: list is non-exhaustive):

Radeon HD 4770/4730/4830/4850/4860/4870/4890
