How to use "install"

I have FC-5 and use KDE.

Can somebody tell me what this does: (without the quote marks)

"/usr/sbin/alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /opt/jre1.5.0_08/bin/java 2"

I don't know anything about "install".

Thanks,

royeo

it adds an alternative possible symlink for java under the "alternatives" framework. you can then use alternatives to select it from a list of potential candidates.
