How to stop terminal escape sequences ?

I'm building a small embedded system, and all console output is currently going over /dev/ttyS0 to a paper-roll teletype thing (remember them ?!).

The Linux I've got generates escape sequences for tabbing and colors. How do I tell linux the terminal can't handle all that stuff ?

Programs should look at the TERM environment variable to find out what kind of terminal a system is using. I'm not sure what kind of values you might use, what about "export TERM=vt100" or so?
