I am using openSUSE 11.1 and I've lost my root password.

The following didn't worked :-

Restart

Boot with a live cd, chroot into the partition on your hard drive then use passwd to reset the root password

What were you intending to do here? I looks like you tried to boot into single-user mode, but it is incomplete. (Where did you get this sequence?)

To boot single-user:
Reboot (Restart)
When the grub menu appears, hit any key to stop the count
Select the desired system and hit "e"
Select the kernel line, and "e" again
Add the word "single" at the end of the line (no quotes)
hit "enter" and then "b" to boot

Once you are in single-user mode, you can reset the root password
