how to rearrange "grub" multi-boot sequence?

Is there a simple and secure way to change the position of multiboot load?
Noticed that "grub" is often "updated" after adding new package.
My "working OS " is the last choice in grub selection and I like to have it as first / automatic default selection.

I now there is "edit" - "E" (on the fly) in grub, but prefer to do the actual changes, if feasible , in the "grub" file itself.

I do not want to move things around and then "update" will change that.

In the file /etc/default/grub you should see a line at the top of the file such as below:

Quote:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
Count the menuentries on your Grub menu and enter the one you want on this line. If the preferred entry is the 4th entry, put the number 3 on this line, edit as root/sudo and save the changes and run grub-mkconfig or update-grub.
