How to put two Linux versions on one Ext HDD.

I have an external HDD with 2 partitions. 524GB Ext4 with Deepin and 476GB Ext4 empty.
How do install Zorin on Partition 2 476GB Ext4. Have tried but getting an error message.

Install Zorin to second

Using auto install I guess for beginners.

Install Grub on Zorin install steps to root. "/" Not MBR.

Boot Deepin and open Terminal in Deepin Linux after Zorin Install.

Code:
sudo update-grub
Readout should show it found your Zorin Install and includes it in your Deepin grub menu.

You could install it to another drive and rsync it onto the other partition. Change the /etc/fstab so it knows it's new location. And update the bootloader to have it included in the menu. Only one of the distros will have the grub.cfg that matters. Which might be your current issue. The first install will be blind to the new install until it's bootloader is updated. And other potential issues.

I usually do it by using the target disk with a virtual machine (using raw device access).

Thus, as far as the VM is concerned, it only has ONE disk.

When you get an error message, try to quote the error message.

I did exactly this about 3 years ago, with Zorin Core OS 8.

As long as you make absolutely certain of the partition you want to install Zorin to (sdb2?), and have the external hard drive plugged in at the time, the Zorin installer should 'see' the available partitions.

It's been a long while since I've used an Ubuntu-style installer, but from what I recall, you need to use the manual partitioning method, not the automatic one. That will simply wipe & replace your existing OS, which is not what you want. You'll need the 'Something else' option, which will allow you to specify the partition you want to install Zorin to.

After doing that, simply follow the steps outlined in the Ubiquity installer.

Mike.
