How to make page numbers happen in Openoffice.org Writer
In other Word Processors if you want to add page numbers it's easy and obvious. Usually you would just go to the "Insert" menu and a an option would be there and it would be easy and intuitive to add them. Not so with OpenOffice.org Writer, at least it's not obvious. Can someone please tell me how to add page numbers to a document in OpenOffice.org Writer?

Insert--->Fields--->Page Number
Open Office can be VERY intuitive. The problem can be that it is different from what you are used to.
I'm not sure the way above is right. It's not working for me.
Here's my way: Insert -> Header -> Default (or Footer -> Default)
Point your cursor on Header or Footer and then chose Insert -> Fields -> Page Number
NOPE....What I said was correct--it works on 1.1.5 AND on 2.0.X
Insert ---> Fields ---> Page Number
You do not have to have headers or footers. MSWord is the same way.
Works fine for me in 2.0. Only thing was(and this may be normal, I don't know), I had to do it at the end of each page. I guess that makes sense, as its not going to number a bunch of unknown pages. Just make sure your cursor is on the last line of the page and follow the instructions above. Then if you so desire, hit the center button, and page number will be brought to the center of the page.

Ummmmmmmm---you can put page numbers (or any other field) anywhere on the page. I just tried it.

I checked in SimplyMEPIS 6.0-1 and its " Insert > Fields > Page count "
Maybe Mepis has a different version of OO than you are using, in which case the command may be slightly different.
You can turn on headers and footers as above, by choosing Insert > Footer > Default or Insert > Header Default. You can also choose Format > Page, click the Header or Footer tab, and select the checkbox there. Click OK.
Then click in the header or footer and choose Insert > Fields > Page Number. Format the page number to look the way you want -- center it, press Tab or right align it to get it on the right side, etc. Just type the word page if you want that to appear.
To have the format "page x of y", turn on the H or Footer. Then type page and a space, choose Insert > Fields > Page Number, type a space, of, and a space, and choose Insert > Fields > Page Count.
To change the format of the number, such as from arabic to roman, double-click it. In the window that appears, select the different format you want. You can also choose Format > Page, and in the Page tab, hold down the Format list and switch from 1 2 3 to whatever format you want.
To restart page numbering, choose Insert > Manual Break, select With Style, select whatever page style you want from the Style list, select Change Page Number, and type 1 (or whatever number) in the page number field. If the page style you select doesn't have a footer or header, you'll need to add one and add the page number you want using one of the methods outlined here.
