how to make modifications to a custom kernel build?

hi. is there a way to make some changes to the way a kernel has been configured without having to rebuild it from scratch?
for instance, say i built a kernel, and now i want to just change one option (say from 'builtin' to 'module', or i want to disable something i had enabled in the options).
would i have to build that part all over again?

thanks.

In most cases, the answer is 'no'. The only situation when it's easy to do without full recompilation (make modules && make modules_install is still needed) is when you want to add one thing as module and it only requires you to change it from not included to module (nothing more). In most other cases, you need to recompile (probably using old config and changing only what you need).
