If I understand the question, the information for the network card is in the /etc/conf.modules file. You must login as root to edit this file.
Use pico to edit /etc/conf.modules
[root@nix]# pico /etc/conf.modules
Depends of your LAN card you could add the following lines to /etc/conf.modules :
alias eth0 xx
options eth0 io=0x2a0 irq=11
and then exit pico, saving /etc/conf.modules.
Try ifconfig as root or [root@nix /root]# route
