how to install gimp - ubuntu


hi all i need some help installing gimp onto my laptop, i am clearly a little useless. i have tried the apt-get install gimp that is says on the gimp download page but all i get is an error message in the terminal saying :
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
what do i do? can anybody help? thank you

sudo apt-get install gimp

you forgot the sudo part (sudo allows you to run a process with root privileges, which is required by apt-get)

when it asks for a password, enter the password you log in with

thank you man... i seem to have run into another problem... i got to the password part and typed it in but nothing came up on the screen so i pushed enter and it said command not found. now the sudo apt-install gimp says command not found. what can i do? (i thank you for your time and your patience, i'm new and it is hard.)

In Linux, it is very important to get your terminal commands correct. A typo can screw up your entire system (especially if it has 'sudo' at the start of it). So please type carefully, or even better, use copy & paste!

EDIT: Ubuntu also has two GUI front ends for this, including Synaptic (advanced, full-featured) and Ubuntu Software Center (simplified and newbie-friendly).
