I'm probably missuderstanding, I usually do, but is the problem that if you do ctrl+alt+backArrow X automatically restarts?

If so you could try moving the xauthority file, or whatever it is called, to another directory. Something like that, just to bugger X; after all X is easy to bugger, or move startx etc. etc..

If you're using Ubuntu you're using GDM as your graphical login manager, right? Stop it.

Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
I'm not sure if it's called just "gdm", so after you've typed up to (and including) the word gdm, press TAB so bash completes it (or twice to see available choices).

After you're done, run the same command, but replace 'stop' with 'start'.
