Question..... How about if I were to copy the Xorg.conf file from my old Debian 5 setup, edit it to remove everything but the monitor references, and paste it into the Debian 6 /etc/X11 folder? Would that just tell Debian 6 my monitor parameters and get me off the block, or would it interfere with whatever Debian 6 is using to otherwise define Xorg parameters for other devices?
That's a perfectly fine solution :-) In fact, I would be surprised if you couldn't use the xorg.conf file exactly as is.
SUCCESS! Worked like a charm. And you were right, I just pasted the whole xorg.conf file into the /etc/X11 folder, rebooted, and everything snapped into place. It still doesn't recognize the monitor in the 'monitor' app (though it was named and defined in the xorg.conf file), but the available resolutions are all there.
it does not work for me under debian 6 and gnome 2.30.2
what I cannot understand is why it works under in ubuntu 11.10, I have just migrate from this last to debian.
as I use a kvm to work with 2 computers, linux does not "see" my monitor and the resolution stops in 1024x768.
I am able to work in 1680x1050 mode using xrandr everytime I log
