here is a good place too look for mandrake specific advice - I don't know about other kernel versions, but from memory it's pretty straight forward to install differing kernel versions obtained from mandrake - i.e. the "mandrakised" ones.

Have you, by chance checked the mirror's? I'd see what's available myself, by going to easy urpmi and following the instructions to update your urpmi sources (if you haven't already done so, of course), and make sure you include all the availabe sources i.e. main, contrib and updates - oh, and I always used one from the plf as well (some of their stuff is nicer/more up to date than mandrakes stuff).

Then if there's a kernel and kernel source available, you can just do that from the mandrake control centre. VVV easy.

But if you're thinking of something from kernel.org or whatever, then the only suggestion I have is to check the mandrake forum here at LQ and the mandrakeusers one I linked earlier.

Hope this helps a little

regards

John

I guess this guide is very concise, you can try it. Though it's written for the gentoo crowd(ignore emerge, use the tar xvjf linux-2.6.6.tar.bz2 at /usr/src), i use it for Slackware too. No problem on that. Also, right here there are a few HOWTO written by our very own LQ members. They are good HOWTO, only thing is that they get very lengthy with lot's of disccusion going on within the thread so you may be confused by them too. Anyway, it's very simple, go try it.

Roger that. I'll take a look at both URLs and give it a shot.

I'm running it. I haven't bothered to recompile my kernel for any reason. I have the big fat one and I merely accept the newest rpm when its ready. It installs, edits lilo, and adds itself as the default, leaving the last good kernel in /etc/lilo.conf as the second choice. It runs fine. After a few days running it, I'll delete the oldest kernel from my HD, leaving the two.
