I started to install opensuse-leap 41.1. It did not install on my hard drive. But the installer delete or formatted the external hard drive. I really do not know what the installer did. I just know that I do not have my data on the external drive.

If not at what stage did you break it off?
Can you install Photorec and Testdisk on whatever you are running right now (or use a CDROM with those applications on it)?

Before trying to recover anything, make sure your new system has all the right drivers for it (use a live cd if needed).
Can you still access your device?
