See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery

It really depends on what you did (breaking/deleting a partition table is almost a non-issue, re-formatting with something else is a different story).

Hi Jens!
I started to install opensuse-leap 41.1. It did not install on my hard drive. But the installer delete or formatted the external hard drive. I really do not know what the installer did. I just know that I do not have my data on the external drive.
Thank you for you

Did you complete the installation?
If not at what stage did you break it off?
Can you install Photorec and Testdisk on whatever you are running right now (or use a CDROM with those applications on it)?

Before trying to recover anything, make sure your new system has all the right drivers for it (use a live cd if needed).
Can you still access your device?

Could you post the output from (using whatever system you have working):
Code:
fdisk -l

There are some forensics tools that may help a little?
