I am installing ISPconfig on a Ubuntu server 9.10. When i write hostname -f i get the unknown host message.

Set your fully qualified hostname. Right now, you don't have one, and a simple Google search would have turned up the answer:

You can run this and it should fix you FQDN issue:

echo server1.example.com > /etc/hostname
/bin/hostname -F /etc/hostname

If it doesn't fix it, you don't have your FQDN set. Follow the link posted originally.
