What distribution are you using? How did you install GAIM? (i.e. did you install from the distro's CD, download directly, do an urpmi/yum/apt-get for it?)
how do i add protocols to my account manager, like msn, yahoo etc.
Use the Account Editor (Tools->Accounts, or the Accounts button on the start screen) to add the account of the appropriate messaging service. Use the checkbox in the account editor to sign online.
Well, I just assumed that it had it all already. When you Add an account, there should be a dropdown for Protocols. Do you see it, and does it have multiple protocols there? If not, what do you see?
The MSN protocol was originally published by Microsoft as an IETF draft. It has since been "embraced and extended" to the point that it had to be reverse engineered to work. Some documentation on this effort is available here. Yahoo hasn't been written yet.
Well Gaim should do just fine. What distro are you using windows_rebel (Mandrake, Fedora, Slackware)? If your distro has a package manager, like rpm for Fedora and Mandrake or pkgtools for Slack try to find the package instead of compiling it yourself. That way all the protocols should be there. That worked for me.
