Question help with mplayer and video files

hi guys!
i'm relatively new to linux and to this forum.i had been using redhat linux 9.0 (shrike) for last 1 week.
i had problems with playing video and audio files.
by searching the forum i had found how to install xmms-mp3 for hearing mp3's.similarly i downloaded mplayer as rpm from mplayerhq.hu.

it gave me error asking libmp3lame.so.o
i downloaded it too as rpm and installed.when it seemed to be the end of all problems ,still i'm not able to play video files(dat,avi..,)

these were messages from terminal

[root@localhost root]# rpm -ivh lame-3.95.1-1.fr.i386.rpm
warning: lame-3.95.1-1.fr.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 547b

[root@localhost root]# rpm -ivh mplayer-1.0pre7-1.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-1.0pre7-1.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 16a61572
Preparing... (10########################################### [100%]
1:mplayer (########################################### [100%]

when i tried to do it again ,it showed

[root@localhost root]# rpm -ivh mplayer-1.0pre7-1.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-1.0pre7-1.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 16a61572
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package mplayer-1.0pre7-1 is already installed
[root@localhost root]#

though it seemed to be installed i can't find where it is installed or how to play it. it would be a great favour if someone could help me to solve this.please help me!

You could try http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html and get all the codecs.

I got mine via Yum which gave me all the codecs, dependencies,GUI and skins.

Lame encoder is used for MP3 so installing that won't allow you to play avi etc.
