I am wondering whether this is possible under linux and a windows share.

---Yes, it is. For me it has been really simple: two machines running debian; install apache on both of them
Code:
apt-get install apache
; download from the internet (or copy from wherever) the mp3 files to /var/www on the server workstation; and you just browsed the remote .mp3 files within mozilla; right click; open with application mplayer (in my case) and I was done.
The point here is that you want the client computer with the mp3 player installed runs on window$...that can be done as well....download mozilla for window$ and type the ip of the computer that holds the mp3 files.....then right click on the
song.mp3 you want to play and that's it.
----Hope all this makes some sense....I was trying to help.

Juanja.
